Employment outlook expected to improve in 2010

Experts often refer to jobs as “lagging indicators” because they’re often the last part of the economy to rebound after a recession.  A growing number of industry analysts are saying that although the unemployment rate may even continue to climb for the next few months, a number of signs are pointing to job growth in 2010.

That’s good news for businesses as well as job seekers.  As business picks up, companies are seeking cost-effective ways to meet both current and projected demand for their products and services.  The Suburban Group’s staffing services makes it possible for employers to boost their productivity without adding permanent overhead.  And Suburban’s administrative services make it possible for companies to outsource some or all of their payroll, training, and other functions.

Volunteers sought for Habitat for Humanity

In 90 countries around the globe, Habitat for Humanity is working to provide people in need with affordable housing.  “It’s a great model,” says Nancy Carlson, president of The Suburban Group and member of the MetroWest/Greater Worcester Habitat’s board of directors.   She notes that volunteers work side by side with partner families who contribute 400 to 500 hours of sweat equity to build their own or other Habitat homes.

“We’re stepping up our efforts to build more houses in the area,” Nancy says.  She notes that the town of Millbury has just donated land—and work is almost completed on a duplex in Sudbury.

“Habitat volunteers experience the joy of helping others meet one of the basic needs in life—a decent home for their families,” Nancy says.  “Everyone has something to contribute.  Our volunteers range from high school students to individuals who help with administrative details or pick up a hammer and get involved with the actual construction.”

To find out more about Habitat or to get involved with a local building project, visit the MetroWest/Greater Worcester website or call Nancy Carlson at 508.366.8521.

Nancy Carlson receives award from Corridor Nine Chamber

At the 2009 Annual Meeting of the Corridor Nine Chamber of Commerce, Nancy Carlson, president of The Suburban Group, was presented with an Oscar—a.k.a. the Chairman’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

In presenting the award, Chamber chairman David Bagdon noted that Nancy served as Chamber president from 2001 to 2003 “during some very challenging times.”  She has also been instrumental in forming many valuable programs, has been a presenter at the Chamber’s workshop series, and is a strong and consistent recruiter of new members.  Over the years, she has received a number of awards, and was recently appointed to the President’s Council.

Chamber president Barbara Clifford credits Nancy with shedding light on some of the complexities and unintended consequences of Massachusetts’ efforts to extend health care coverage to more employees.  “Nancy’s support of Corridor Nine’s initiatives to provide open communications with state legislators gives us reason to hope that critical changes will be made to regulations that have an impact on so many businesses in Massachusetts.”

“The Corridor Nine Chamber is a wonderful organization,” Nancy says.  “I’ve appreciated the opportunity to work with so many great people in this business network that is second to none.”
