Mobile Job Recruiting – Use the High Number of Smartphone Users to Your Advantage

July 6th, 2012

Is your business investing in mobile job recruiting? If not, it may be time to do so. The fact is, more people than ever have smartphones – phones that allow them to connect to the Internet in a matter of moments and potentially even submit an application for employment with your firm. Social media recruiting is the topic of the HR world and with good reason.

How Do Job Seekers Use Mobile Recruiting?

One of the biggest hold backs right now is to understand how job applicants are using mobile recruiting. How can they use their mobile phone to connect to the job they need? By understanding this, it is possible to understand how to target those top applicants. Very few employers understand this well enough to take action to use it. Those that do, such as by providing apps on their websites and creating mobile websites for hiring, are getting results.

Study on Online Recruiting

In one study, done by research lab Potentialpark involved some 30,000 job seekers throughout the world. The study focused on the mobile career presence of about 350 top employers in the United States, Asia and Europe. In this study, the lab found that “19 percent of job seekers use their mobile devices as a way of benefiting their career in some way. About 50 percent of all seekers noted that they could image doing so.” However, of those 350 employers, only seven percent of them had a mobile version of their website geared towards applicants available. Only three percent of those companies had a mobile job app for their site. You can see the clear disparity in those figures.

What Do Job Seekers Want?

When it comes to how they use those apps and mobile websites, job seekers are looking for information. Employers will find that the installation of such a tool is incredibly helpful in locating candidates in new ways, but job seekers want to be able to use such apps to make it easier for them to look for jobs and maybe even receive job alerts when positions become available. Others want to be able to do the following:

  • Track the status of a submitted application
  • Look for ways to improve their applicant
  • Check a calendar that points to career related events the employer is hosting
  • Apply for jobs directly
  • Contact the recruitment and HR teams
  • Email the page to a friend

The list goes on. In other words, with the growing trend of smartphones only like to continue over the next few years, there is no doubt that many people will want to use them as a tool for locating, applying for and getting jobs. Any employer not in the game is likely to miss top applicants in their field.
